Cow Jumping [Episode #259]

Manitoulin Fact, Fiction or Folklore? Episode #259 of Jack and Dylon's Daily Video Podcast delves into the myth behind “Cow Jumping” and one of the Island's unique urban legends which may have gone on to spur the Dairy Farmers of Ontario marketing department to create a bizarrely original youth oriented advertising campaign.

El Patio de los Cipreses en el Generalife [Episode #258]

The Palacio de Generalife or in Arabic "Architect's Garden" was the summer palace and country estate of the Nasrid rulers of the Emirate of Granada in Al-Andalus, now beside the city of Granada in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain.

The palace and gardens were built during the reign of Muhammad III (1302–1309) and redecorated shortly after by Abu I-Walid Isma'il (1313–1324). Much of the garden is a recent reconstruction of dubious authenticity. Théophile Gautier, a mid-19th century visitor, complained that

“Of the Generalife nothing now remains but some arcades and some large panels of arabesques, unfortunately plastered over with layers of whitewash that have been applied again and again with all the obstinacy of a dispiriting cleanliness. Little by little the delicate sculptures and the marvellous guilloches of this fairy-like architecture have been obliterated, filled up, and engulfed. What is at present nothing more than a faintly-vermiculated wall, was formerly open lace-work as fine as those ivory leaves which the patience of the Chinese carves for fans.”

The complex consists of the Patio de la Acequia (Court of the Water Channel or Water-Garden Courtyard), which has a long pool framed by flowerbeds, fountains, colonnades and pavilions, and the Jardím de la Sultana (Sultana's Garden or Courtyard of the Cypress). The former is thought to best preserve the style of the medieval Persian garden in Al-Andalus.

Originally the palace was linked to the Alhambra by a covered walkway across the ravine that now divides them. The Generalife is one of the oldest surviving Moorish gardens.

The Fellow's Quadrangle [Episode #257]

Merton College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in England. Its foundation can be traced back to the 1260s when Walter de Merton, chancellor to Henry III and later to Edward I, first drew up statutes for an independent academic community and established endowments to support it. The important feature of Walter's foundation was that this "college" was to be self-governing and the endowments were directly vested in the Warden and Fellows. The Making Of [Episode #256]

Production notes for The Making of Episode #256 of Jack and Dylon's Daily Video Podcast. Listening to Crimson King - In the court of King Crimson on beat-up noise-cancelling headphones while preparing today's content and pondering the adventures of other mad professors such as Dr. Rusty Venture. Editing went smoother than expected especially compared to the all-day build required for this past Sunday’s Episode #253. Encountering an audio glitch, which is definitely not syncing as smoothly as what’s being presented during editing. Going to try audio splitting and re-rendering before uploading and getting on with day digitally illustrating the final two pages of our Manitoulin Colouring Book. Then it's uploading and social media broadcasting this evening!

Calypso in Grenada [Episode #255]

General elections were held in Grenada on 13 September 1962. Herbert Blaize's Grenada National Party won six of the ten seats and Blaize was appointed Chief Minister for the second time. Blaize served as Head of Government until the next general election in August 1967, initially as Chief Minister until March 1967, and subsequently when Grenada became a fully internally autonomous Associated State, as Grenada's first Premier.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele [Episode #254]

Corso Vittorio Emanuele is a wide street connecting Piazza Duomo to Piazza San Babila. During the day, because it is traffic-free and has porticoes lined with shops - particularly clothing and accessory boutiques - it is the ideal place for shopping and window shopping. Post-war reconstruction has provided for a series of shop-lined small covered galleries branching from the side of the Corso. Discover more with Jack and Dylon's Daily Video Podcast!

A Day at the Market [Episode #253]

Last year I captured all kinds of time lapse footage with our GoPro Hero 4 Silver while I was at Manitoulin Island markets with our Manitoulin Island Colouring Book. For today’s special time travel musical episode I spent the day distilling down about 3 hours Mindemoya Farmer's Market footage into just over two and half minutes of moonshine... er... music video featuring mostly me colouring and rediscovering the peaceful joy of art therapy.

Betts is Blowing Bubbles [Episode #251]

At first I interpreted the year on this card as “1945”, but upon closer inspection we’re pretty sure that the date is actually April 7th, 1925. Which means that this Lonely Daddy/Dear Little Bells postcard from Milano, Italy was composed and posted exactly 92 years ago today to predate the “What This Baby Is Doing” story from Enjoying Postcards Episode #46 by several months.

Thursday, 6 April 2017

A slightly different distillation for tonight's musical episode #249 of Jack and Dylon’s Jack and Dylon's Daily Video Podcast. This time converting our past two days into just over three and half minutes of time lapse material. Happy with the evolution of our documentation, although the best material remains archived. Had first progressive production meeting of beyond Episode #261 and are both pleased with the direction we’ll be taking post-Easter with plans to include much more than just our Manitoulin Colouring Book. Speaking of which, be sure to watch to the end for a glimpse of our new cover design amidst the rest of tonight’s episode. Meant to include examples of Ocean House photo and sketch, but could only locate the former to share with this episode.

Zagreb Museum [Episode #248]

We never did discover the exact story behind the location of this postcard from 1910, but apparently Zagreb's numerous museums reflect the history, art and culture not only of Zagreb and Croatia, but also of Europe and the world. Around thirty collections in museums and galleries comprise more than 3.6 million various exhibits, excluding church and private collections.

Rotterdam Stadhuisplein [Episode #244]

Located directly in front of Rotterdam’s city hall, the Coolsingel, Town Hall Square aka Stadhuisplein, is the popular pedestrian area at the center of Rotterdam with restaurants and several bars.

Victories of Feyenoord, the Dutch professional football club based in Rotterdam, are celebrated here by thousands of supporters.

Stadhuisplein is also an important connection between Coolsingel and Lijnbaan, the main shopping street of Rotteredam.

Powder Point Bridge [Episode #243]

Duxbury Beach is a beach in the town of Duxbury, Massachusetts. It is six miles long and is accessed by the Powder Point Bridge from Duxbury, or Gurnet Road from Marshfield. Four of the six miles of coastal beach are owned by the "Duxbury Beach Preservation Society," which leases the beach out to the town of Duxbury on a yearly basis, under the circumstances that the town of Duxbury provides Harbormasters to police the area. And for a blast from the past, I did some double-checking and discovered that this card was indeed to the same Miss Temple of Halifax, Nova Scotia as Enjoying Postcards Episode #29! Here's the link!

Timbering and Rock Picking [Episode #242]

Bright, cool morning. Sue and Ashley enjoyed lunch together yesterday as Sue’s new Fuji finally arrived! Finished tough timbering and rock picking page for Manitoulin colouring book yesterday as well. Then edited down first day of work on page into today’s episode #242 of Jack and Dylon's Daily Video Podcast. Plus! Watch closely for rare footage of an actual artist in the wild. Apparently Jack Whyte has been working on a new self-portrait in the form of an assemblage collage and can’t find certain items that we photographed for his auto-biographical Scrapbook: a story of art including a shoe horn, slide rule and miniature wooden bowling pins.

Ensenada Old Mexico [Episode #238]

Ensenada is a coastal city in Mexico, the third-largest in Baja California. Lying 125 kilometres south of San Diego on the Baja California Peninsula, it is locally referred to as La Cenicienta del Pacífico, "The Cinderella of the Pacific."
